Netflix is coming to us with a new French movie “Cuties” this September. This French movie is about an 11-year-old Muslim immigrant girl named Amy who joins a twerking dance group formed by teenage girls named ‘Cuties’. Amy has defied her values and traditions and made her parents upset through this step, but will she find her way through dance?

Ever since the trailer of this french movie has been released, this movie has created a huge buzz. The movie created by Maïmouna Doucouré has received much critical praise and acclaim but not all of them are positive. “Cuties” has sparked outrage on social media as many people are not happy as they think the movie is hyper sexualizing teenage girls.

The film Cuties was already premiered in international film festivals like the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, 70th Berlin International Film Festival during the start of the year 2020.

It was previously set to be released on 1st April 2020 but was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. So now, the movie is going to be released for worldwide viewers only on Netflix.

According to the official synopsis, “Cuties” is about an eleven years old girl named Amy who lives with her mother, Mariam, and younger brother waiting for the father to come from Senegal.

Amy becomes fascinated by the twerking dance group, Cuties, and its member Angelica. Angelica is a free-spirited dancer and a disobedient neighbor.

Amy’s mother has a set of rules and religious values for her family that contrasts with the dance crew. Eventually, Amy joins the twerking crew secretly to escape her family’s simmering dysfunction.

Later, Amy propels her group into a more sensual dance routine to perform at a local dance contest in hopes of making their way into stardom while defying her family tradition.

With this premise, the public is having a problem with minors doing such roles and is raged with the film directors and Netflix.

Maïmouna Gueye plays the role of Amy’s mother Mariam who has strict rules and traditions and is upset by her daughter’s rebellion against her religious values.

Maimouna is a French actress who is best known for her work in movies like “The Climb”, “Bacon on the Side”, “Payoff”, etc.
